Agrinergy submits first CDM Project in Thailand for Registration
13th April 2007
Agrinergy has submitted the first CDM project in Thailand for registration with the CDM Executive Board. The project with the Khon Kaen Sugar Power Plant, a leading Thai biomass based Electricity Company, is located in the Thai province of Khon Kaen. It involves the installation of a new biomass power generation unit and is expected to reduce emissions by 61,000 tonnes per year.
The project promotes sustainable development through the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, other gases that are generated in the operation of grid based plants and ash. In addition, the installation of the project activity leads to an increase in direct employment at the plant.
This project is a milestone for the development of the CDM in Thailand as the registration of projects should provide further incentives to overcome the lack of a formal project approval process from the Thai Designated National Authority. To date this has been a key factor constraining the uptake of CDM projects in Thailand. Somkiat Chitphromphan, Agrinergy Representative in Thailand explains: “We expect that the number of emission reduction projects in Thailand will now accelerate, and Agrinergy looks forward to playing a leading role in the development of the CDM potential in Thailand.”
