Sector Experience: Hydro

Hydro power has been a very successful emission reduction category under the CDM framework and this area offers the potential for further development. There is a growing recognition of the benefits that hydro power brings and across Northern Indian states where the potential for such projects exists the CDM has been used to facilitate the growth of hydro power.

Emissions reductions from hydroelectric projects come from offsetting grid electricity with a zero-emissions

source of power. Since in many countries grid generation is dominated by fossil fuel fired plants, emissions reductions from such projects can be very large.
